This started out as our diary of ownership by two rescued Airedale Terriers, Sophie and Murphy. Now we have added a Black Lab. We hope that our stories will amuse and educate you about life with Airedale Terriers and others.

A Little Under the Weather
Murphy here:
I have not been feeling like myself this week. I have been feeling pokey, puny and generally under the weather. Mom made me go see the vet person, who took my temperature (ooh) and drew blood (double ooh). I also had a bump on my lip, so he took a sample from it (triple ooh). Doc said that it looked ok under a big eye he calls a microscope. He said all systems were "go." Sounded like a good thing to me, I love to go anywhere! It took me about 4 days of laying around, but now I am back and the bump is getting smaller!

SQUIRREL!!
SQUIRREL alert this morning....one dead, juicy, furry SQUIRREL conveniently located at the bottom of the driveway. Dad was at the end of my leash today....missed the SQUIRREL, but I did not! Picked it up and began to carry it along for the walk. About that time, Dad saw what I had and told me to leave a perfectly tasty breakfast behind....waste of good SQUIRREL meat if you ask me.....

My squirrelly plan
So here is the plan: I am going to hide behind this leafy green plant and spy on the squirrels. Just when they let their guard down, I am going to leap out from my hiding place and catch them and eat them!!!

Where's the beef?
Where's the steak that was on this plate? Walked away for just a minute and it is gone. 2 furry suspects in custody. People unhappy and hungry.....
Naughty boys
So the beds are carefully made in the guest rooms and everyone is tucked into their (dog) beds supposedly. Somehow by morning, the crisp covers of our adult son's bed and the guest room next door are crumpled. Mmmmm.....Clues about the culprits: black hair and drool on a pillow, bed pillows piled up and a Carolina Panthers stuffed animal mascot on the floor.....the suspects are rounded up and questioned.....
As it turns out, Murphy takes the guest room daybed as it is simply a step up off the floor and a mascot hitting the floor to get his sleeping arrangements. (I think he is a Dallas Cowboys fan at heart.) Jerry takes a more daring approach and leaps up into the middle of our son's double bed and rakes the bed pillows around to suit himself. Mystery solved. Bedroom doors closed and regular dog beds occupied.

Post Beach
The beach is our most favorite place, but we need naps when we get back! It was windy today and the waves were rough. We thought maybe the water was alive and we stayed away from it today. We saw a dead seagull that smelled delightful! Our people would not let us roll on it and we could not understand why! Lots of people ask what kind of dogs we are. We know we are special dogs, you can call us whatever you want. People love Murphy's magnificent tail as it is undocked and has a wonderful majestic curl at the top. Murphy is glad that Jerry has healed up and can get back to the beach. He had to miss two whole weeks of digging and rolling in the sand and smelling the air and feeling the sand between his toes. Our people are glad too. Now that Jerry is healthy, he can fully enjoy life! We are resting up for our next adventure....... |

Jerry's surgery
Here is the patient. Aren't the socks cute? I am using those to make sure he cannot get paw traction to pull his collar off. His entropion repair seems to be a success and his teeth are clean. Apparently he had extra "redundant" skin in his eyelid area that our vet had to cut out. Yuck. He will wear the e collar for 10 days and get his stitches out on Sept. 4: just in time for the holiday weekend. Bummer is that there is no beach walking until Sept. 4....we will make it up to him and Murphy over the holiday weekend.

Jerry's big surgery...send good thoughts
Jerry has his big surgery day tomorrow to repair the entropion in his right eye and to get his teeth cleaned. Please keep his vet and Jerry in your thoughts. We are hopeful that this eyelid repair will be successful. Stay tuned.

Hi. I am new here.
So here is what arrived in our lives on July 19, 2015. Nope, not an Airedale, obviously a black Lab. Say hello to Jerry. He needed a home and we were ready to take on a new furry family member. He is six years old and a good natured, sweet dog. He is overweight and has an entropion (rolled eyelid) on his right eye. It was repaired once, but was not successful. We will be forging ahead with that surgery next week to see if we can get better results for him. Murphy was not too taken with our non-terrier addition. He sulked for a couple of days and then was grumpy for the next few days and now has agreed to a truce. They do play sometimes and seem to be getting more used to the idea of each other. It is amusing to watch Murphy play with Jerry. "Bitey face" has not been a hit with Jerry. On the other hand, running around and wrestling is a great source of entertainment.

Dog on Deployment
This past spring, we were lucky to take part in an unofficial version of "Dogs on Deployment." VA Airedale Rescue put us in touch with a service person in need of immediate and temporary housing for her Airedale Mix. We were lucky to take in Abe, 35 pounds of fur and fun. It was love at first sight for Murphy and the two were inseparable from day one. We were very depressed when he left us in May after eight weeks of fun and frolic.

In the meantime....
Right after he got home, not feeling too good |
End of week two, seeing a little smile |
It's been a long time and a lot has happened......
Well hellooo...it has been a long while since I have posted about our adventures. After several false starts and should haves on the blogging and personal fronts, I am back....unfortunately, one of our setbacks was the loss of my dear Sophie in May 2014. Wow, over a year ago, you are thinking. That is exactly right. It has taken me a long time to process that loss. Sophie's troubles started in January, 2014. She began to develop some suspicious bumps and lumps. Those of us who are owned by terriers, know that is common for them and often, not good. It was not good...in the end, her mammary cancer returned with a vengeance and metastasized and the effort to fix all of that was going to take her last strength. We made the difficult choice to ease her out of her discomfort, before she was left to an undignified end. I think that would have hurt her just as much. She went out surrounded by love and filled with treats. Kudos to our wonderful vet and staff. However I am keeping her picture up as she really was the inspiration for my posts.....
